Beau-Tie is a free, browser-based bow tie editor. You map the causes that could lead to a risk event, the consequences that could follow it, and the controls on every pathway — aligned to the ISO 31000 vocabulary — then export the result to PNG, PDF, Excel or PowerPoint. It opens in the browser you are reading this in, with nothing to install and no account to create.
What “free” means here
“Free” earns suspicion in this category, so here is the specific offer, itemised:
- No account
- The editor opens and works without a login. Signing in exists for one reason — syncing your work between devices — and it is optional.
- No trial mechanics
- There is no countdown, no locked tier of the editor, and no point at which the diagram you built stops being editable.
- Exports included
- PNG for a slide, PDF for a report, Excel for the register, PowerPoint for the workshop. Exporting your own work is not a premium feature.
- Your data stays yours
- Everything you build lives in your browser's storage unless you sign in and choose to save it. There is no server holding your diagrams, so there is nothing to lose access to.
- No advertising
- Nothing on the page is sponsored and nothing about your work is sold.
The honest caveat: this is an early-access product and future pricing for the wider suite is undecided. What does not change is the architecture — your diagrams live on your device, and your exports are ordinary files you already hold. Nothing you build here can be held hostage to a plan.
What it does
- The full bow tie structure. Causes, preventive controls, the risk event, mitigating and recovery controls, consequences — each control typed (preventive, detective, corrective, directive, recovery), rated for effectiveness, and positioned along its pathway.
- Ratings on a 5×5 matrix. Residual, target and appetite ratings against a configurable risk matrix, so the diagram carries the assessment as well as the mechanism.
- 10 complete starting points. Templates for risks most organisations carry — cyber breach, supply chain, key person, safety and more — each with causes, controls and consequences already drawn.
- Workshop-ready exports. One diagram becomes a PNG for the pack, a PDF with the control detail, an Excel register extract, or an editable PowerPoint slide.
